Wealth Redistribution Corset (Community Care Playclothes Series)

Wire & fabric, March 2021

Wire & fabric, March 2021

Using corsetry to to symbolize the upper class, this top is boned with wire that extends out of the top and spills over the shoulders. This movement is intended to represent wealth flowing from the upper class into the pockets of the working class, present in the qr codes to mutual aid funds hanging from the sleeve structures. These qr codes link to funds in my community, Northfield & the Twin Cities, allowing the viewer to interact with the work by heading to these sites to either redistribute their own wealth, or claim resources that they are currently in need of.

Below, you can click each picture of a QR code frame and be sent to its corresponding site to get connected to mutual aid networks.

"the revolution starts in your community!" sister prints

Linocut print, January 2021

Lino, January 2021

It’s easy to fall into a state of hopelessness when thinking about the likelihood that we see systemic change in our lifetime. This set of prints is meant to be a reminder that we can create our ideal society in our personal communities. In fact, we cannot implement systemic change if our individual communities haven’t committed themselves to the ideas of the revolution we are working towards. My intent is to prompt the reader to think about ideas they can introduce and implement with their chosen community in order to directly support, grow, and revolutionize their own space.

"so you "support survivors:)" but don't hold their abusers accountable..."

Zine, December 2020

December 2020, collage on paper

I wrote this zine after leaving a community in which people congratulated themselves for their commitment to “feminism,” and then told me I was overreacting when I expressed distaste for the fact that they were still close friends with a man that stalked me. I know situations like this happen all the time, so my intent in writing this is to both share what I know about what true accountability looks like, and to call out those that claim to support survivors, but don’t walk their talk by participating in accountability processes. I ask that readers show up to this work ready to be critical of themselves and their communities.

"place/places"

Solar plate intaglio, October 2020

Solar Plate Intaglio, October 2020

Prompted to reflect on a “sense of place,” I realized how inextricably connected people and places are; how we experience places differently based on who we share those spaces with, and how our relationships are defined by the spaces they take place in. In “place/places,” I reflect on my girlfriend, Grace, and I’s relationship during its early stages, which took place during the worldwide quarantine of 2020. Never before in history have new relationships had to navigate such a landscape and find their sense of place under such conditions. A collage of physical places we visited during our weekly meetings over three months of quarantine, this piece celebrates the fact that we carved out a multitude of joyful moments and spaces even during a period of worldwide grief. I aim to express my gratitude for finding a sense of place in Grace herself, and my excitedness to continue cultivating a love that is a refuge of joy for both of us.

"iwouldtotallydateyouifyouwereaboy"

Soundscape, September-October 2020

September-October 2020

I can recall numerous adolescent sleepovers in which I innocently shared the night with a girl friend of mine, and thought to myself that I would totally date them if they were a boy. Looking back, it’s blatantly obvious that I had numerous crushes, and was even in love with, these girls. In this soundscape, I revisit and perform the sounds of these sleepovers in my college dorm room, a place in which I consciously cultivate queer community and express my identity confidently. Layered in with sounds I created with objects that I now associate with expressing my queerness, my intent is to reclaim the sleepovers of my younger days and recognize them for what they were: spaces of naive exploration and innocent discovery. While I honor these events, I also grieve a childhood in which I could not express my attraction freely. Both celebratory and sorrowful, my hope is that “iwouldtotallydateyouifyouwereaboy” speaks to the adolescent experiences of other queer women, thus helping them attach a sense of solidarity to previous memories that may have felt quite isolating.

"Multiplicities"

Digital collage, August-September 2020

August - September 2020, shot on iPhone & edited in Photoshop

Tasked with abstracting portraits of a person and objects they hold sacred, I created these images of my girlfriend, Grace, and in the process let the viewer get a glimpse into her aura, our relationship, and how I view her.

dorm room collages

Mixed media collage, August-September 2020

August 24th-September 3rd 2020, mixed media in sketchbook

I started this school year in a two week long quarantine to my dorm room. As we weren’t allowed access to the art studios on campus, my printmaking professor assigned us a series of collages made from whatever we could find around our living spaces. There is a collage for each day of online classes, with each being unique to my findings and feelings of a particular day. As a set, they give a peek into my living environment for that bit of time.

"Turns Out I Was a Lesbian All Along"

Zine, June 2020

June 2020, collage on paper

Designed to be a more sophisticated version of the “Am I Gay” quizzes taking space up on the internet, this zine poses questions prompting the reader to question their sexuality, while sharing my personal thoughts and experiences in an effort to help them figure their answer out. I made this zine because it’s something that I would have found helpful when I was questioning what identity was right for me; I hope that people that are questioning whether their attraction to men is cultural or biological will find it affirming and helpful:)
